About this course
The combined Phlebotomy and EKG Technician program provides the necessary skills required to function as a vital member of the clinical laboratory team. Learn to collect blood specimens from clients for the purpose of laboratory analysis, become familiar with all aspects of blood collection, and the necessary skills needed to perform venipunctures safely. Combined with EKG, the course further covers topics and processes critical to conducting and interpreting electrocardiograms (EKGs) including the anatomy and physiology of the heart, technology used such as the EKG machine, how to interpret a rhythm strip, and details of a myocardial infarction.
Externship
Students who successfully complete this program are eligible to participate in an optional volunteer externship opportunity with a local company/agency/organization in order to gain valuable hands-on experience.
Certifications
Course prepares you to take the leading national/industry-recognized certification exam(s) essential to entry-level employment in this fast growing field: NWCA National Certification (NWCA) Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) Exam.
Costs
Course includes CPR and required textbooks. Exams not included in the cost of the program.
Entry and Healthcare Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Accuplacer Placement Exam meeting the minimum Math and Reading scores, if you do not have prior college credits
- CORI background check
- Proof of immunizations, a negative TB test, a COVID-19 vaccine with a booster, or a drug screening may be required for certain healthcare classes.
- You will receive an email from jmccloud@northshore.edu before the first class, containing the student healthcare packet. This packet must be reviewed, electronically signed, and submitted prior to the start of class.
